Description

We want Gateshead to be a place where everyone thrives

Gateshead Council has an enviable reputation as a stable and well-run authority.  We also know it’s a great place to live and work, indeed The Guardian’s ‘Best places to live rankings’ place Newcastle Gateshead at number one in the UK.  We have ambitious plans to make the borough even better.

Over the next 20 years we are looking to continue to transform Gateshead.  We have a huge amount of potential in terms of our regeneration and development plans, but we are also aware of the need to develop a very different approach if we are to truly meet the challenges ahead and respond to the fast-changing needs of our communities and businesses.

In essence - we need to become more responsive, proactive and flexible – and ‘business as usual’ simply won’t cut it anymore.  That is why we have introduced a new senior management structure, but more importantly a new culture based upon our Thrive agenda which focuses on delivery and outcomes – to the direct benefit of our residents.  A vital part of our transformation journey is the recruitment of a Service Director for Legal and Democratic Services who will play a crucial role in the council’s next chapter.

Reporting to the Strategic Director for Corporate Services and Governance, we are seeking a new Service Director to lead legal and democratic services as well as elections.  The role is also the Deputy Monitoring Officer, and as such will play a prominent role in the corporate effectiveness of the council.  We are seeking exceptional candidates with a track record of success in a senior local authority legal role, and you will have a strong understanding of governance and probity as well as the ability to build trust with councillors, colleagues and partners.
